A Commonwealth Government Funded Project Proudly supported by Queensland Health and The Cancer Council Queensland Our MissionTo work in partnership with health services and support agencies, ethnic/indigenous communities and consumers to improve the quality, accessibility and suitability of support services for people living with lung cancer in Queensland. Funding ApplicationIn April 2005, an application was lodged by The Australian Lung Foundation to the Building Cancer Support Groups Grants Program (through the Department of Health and Ageing). The application was successful and a grant of $80,000 was received to be utilized over a 4 year period. An internet based resource is to be created which will be available to clinicians and patients alike. The information will help determine what support services are available in their local area. The NeedAs Queensland is the most rural and geographically large state in Australia, the challenge to provide all lung cancer patients with access to quality care and support is an ongoing one. In 2005, deaths due to lung cancer in females were higher than breast cancer, suggesting the future at risk population and reflecting tobacco consumption trends. It is the lack of available support and services in remote and very remote areas that has led to the need for increased levels of accessibility of goods, services and opportunities for social interaction. The program will target people with lung cancer, their families and carers in both rural and remote communities of Queensland, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The program will be aimed at culturally and linguistically diverse groups including older Australians, children and adolescents. Project Aims
1. improve the dissemination of information to patients, families and carers living with lung cancer 2. increase the capacity of consumer support groups that focus on lung cancer, and 3. improve the quality of support provided. The aims of this project will help to enrich the lives of people living with lung cancer and empower patients and families during the treatment period and beyond. This project will also help to form, maintain and strengthen local networks to become more effective in the delivery of services and to develop new partnerships that will seamlessly integrate planning and delivery of quality cancer support group activities throughout Queensland. The Australian Lung Foundation is expecting to produce this information in leaflet form (available now below) and is also working with The Queensland Cancer Fund and Queensland Health to provide this information via the internet.
