The Australian Lung Foundation
2008 Award for Research into the Early Detection of Lung Cancer

This grant is designed to facilitate research into the early detection of lung cancer by suitably qualified medical, scientific, nursing or allied health practitioners. The research can relate to any aspect of the early detection of lung cancer, including screening technologies. Preference will be given to projects with a strong translational focus.

Conditions

The grant is valued at up to $105,000 and it is envisaged that this amount would be used as:

(a) a full PhD Scholarship or

(b) as two or three PhD top-up Scholarships or

(c) as a short-term Project Grant for 12 months

The grant will be competitive and open to citizens or permanent residents of both Australia and New Zealand. PhD enrolment with a recognized University is mandatory, as is supervision by a member of the Australian Lung Foundation and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand.  Supplementary clinical work will be allowed in adherence to NHMRC guidelines for PhD students.

Supervisors may apply for a full PhD Scholarship or PhD top-up Scholarship without having recruited a specific student to the project at the time of application. However, funds will not be released by the ALF until a suitable PhD student is recruited and enrolled at an approved university. The award will lapse if not taken up within 12 months.

If no suitable PhD scholarship applications are received, the ALF reserves the right to fund a Project Grant for 12 months that addresses a specific topic in the early detection of lung cancer.

Applications should include a brief curriculum vitae and list of publications over the last 5 years for the principal supervisor and student (for Scholarship applications), or for the principal investigator (for Project Grant applications). The application should also provide a summary of the rationale for the study, scientific design, feasibility, budget, intended duration and whether or not it has gained ethics approval. Information should also be provided on other sources of funding, and how the grant would be used if the application were to be successful. The Education & Research Subcommittee of the TSANZ will assess applications. Six-monthly project reports are essential for continued funding.

The judging criteria for the submitted application will be:

Criterion  Weight
Originality of idea and impact of the study  25%
Feasibility of project  25%
Significance of hypothesis and appropriateness of methods  25%
Publication record and awards  25%
Total 100%

The winner will be notified in late July 2008. The grant will be officially presented by The Australian Lung Foundation at their 2008 Australian Lung Cancer Conference which is to take place at the Gold Coast, Queensland from 21-24 August.

The closing date for applications is 5.00pm Friday 27th June 2008.

All applications must follow The Australian Lung Foundation's official application form structure (set out below).
